Louisiana Day 1: Food, Food, Food

I think I should be calling this trip “Eating Through Louisiana” with how much food I have eaten just in the past 30 or so hours since I arrived here. There has been beignets, cajun shrimp and rice, and cajun boudin sausage. So much food and so little time!

After flying overnight for the first time, I arrived in New Orleans about 5:00 a.m. It was nice flying overnight because you don’t loose a whole day traveling, but you do loose a couple hours because a nap is inevitable. Also, since we were already up, there was no better way than to start my trip than with coffee and beignets.

If you’re diabetic I don’t know if this is the best breakfast choice for you; because it is like eating pure sugar. I definitely got a little bit of a sugar rush after eating this.

I had read a few blogs leading up to this trip about the do’s and don’ts of New Orleans, and I sure am happy I remembered the tip they recommend about Cafe Du Monde. Tip: Don’t wear black and don’t put anything valuable, or that you want to keep clean on the table.

I watched a lady at the next table dressed in a black t-shirt and jeans take a bit of a beignet.  As you can imagine seeing the amount of powdered sugar in the photo above, more than half of it ended up on her shirt and pants. Not something that is easy to clean off!

After a good breakfast it was time to hit the road to head up north to Ville Platte where I am staying for a few days with family. While we passed through Baton Rouge and Lafayette, I decided to catch up on some sleep.

Dinner had to have been the best things I have eaten in a long time! (besides the beignets) We had Shrimp étouffée …YUMMY! I wish I had taken a photo because it was beautiful. I am making sure the recipe comes home with me.

The rest of the day was spent in a food coma (just like I’m sure the rest of this trip is going to be). Were already planning when were going to eat what since I have never eaten crawfish or gumbo before. I’ll be sure to share photos!

I can’t wait to see what else we get to do while were here. There are also rumors we might do a swamp tour. Not having a set plan is typically a bit hard for me, but instead of being go, go, go I get to enjoy each bit as we go.

For more of my adventure, check back here soon! If I get recipes I’ll try and share those too!
